Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you – 1 Peter 5:7
“I know you’re getting excited,” Maggie announced. “Overjoyed,” Sarah responded solemnly. “What’s the matter?” “I just didn’t know how much work is required for throwing yourself a fiftieth birthday party. There’s this and that to think about. What if things don’t turn out the way I want them to? Maybe you can check out my list and see what I’m doing wrong.” “I already know. You’ve mentally invited Confusion and Doubt to your party. That’s why you can’t think clearly. Uninvite them as guests, and you’ll be fine,” Maggie advised.
Worrying is like planning a party and inviting unwanted guests, hoping they won’t attend. This was the message for the opening scenario, something that I’m often reminded of when I’ve chosen to allow my imagination to entertain a list of negative “what-if’s.” My prayers would frequently incorporate fears that had yet to occur. This prevented me from adhering to Jesus’ teachings about the futility of worrying: “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” (Matthew 6:27).
While healthy concern is about wisely preparing to handle life’s situations, worrying creates doubt and confusion. It not only drains but can also lead to negative outcomes through fear-driven actions. Guests like worry don’t belong in vessels of hope and peace. So, let’s make certain to uninvite it from our lives daily.
