A Faithful Confidante – Thursday, June 4, 2026

A talebearer revealeth secrets: But he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter – Proverbs 11:13

The story is about Kelly, who, after being told a secret, feels the need to share it with someone, so she tells Nana.  Learning of her grandmother’s forgetfulness, Kelly feels assured that what she divulges won’t be repeated. However, Kelly’s confidence is turned to regret a week later after reading a post on Facebook, where Nana thanks those who prayed that God would heal her memory issues. “It feels so good to remember things again. But don’t worry, Kelly, I’ve also been healed from gossiping.   So, the secret you weren’t supposed to tell anyone is safe with me.”

While the opening scenario may have achieved its goal of prompting a smile, it nevertheless demonstrates a significant issue with many side effects. Because divulging a secret may offer a temporary release from carrying around something that’s too tantalizing not to share, it will also create the weight of not having been a faithful confidante.  Then there’s the stress of wondering if the other person will repeat what was told.

The saying, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” should apply to the handling of sensitive matters.  It’s not enough to say you’ll keep a secret; you must put it into action. Just as Jesus demonstrated loyalty, so can we be a faithful confidante to whoever needs one.
