There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it – 1 Corinthians 10:13
Lifetime’s Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery is a story about Cassie Newton, a married best-selling Christian author and feminist icon. While Cassie’s advocacy of empowerment had gained her a large following, it also ignited opposition and threats. Ultimately, concerns for Cassie’s safety led to the hiring of a bodyguard, and it eventually developed into a romantic relationship. This affair subsequently became the catalyst for a blackmail scheme by Cassie’s assistant.
I perceived the movie as a modern-day version of David’s fall from grace when he chose to pursue a married woman named Bathsheba. It also sparked the remembrance of Jesus’ message, when He said: “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). Both Cassie and David chose to allow a glance at an attractive object to become the breeding ground for lust. Consequently, they chose not to recognize their marital and spiritual commitments and yielded to their yearnings.
In many instances, before falling physically, a person has an opportunity to catch themself. The same applies when feeling spiritually shaky: God will provide a window to compose oneself and keep from falling. The person needs only to be willing to reach for His hand.
