I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all – Ecclesiastes 9:11
Every step I take
And every move I make
Your Hands are guiding me
Every “yes” or “no”
Is the evidence I show
Of who I choose to be
Though at times I fall
After giving my all
I’m still in my race
So one day I’ll receive
The reward I believe
Awaits me in Your Grace
Thoughts of an elderly man walking with a walker resurfaced while composing the opening poem. Our paths crossed as he exited the building I was preparing to enter. His greeting included a reference to moving slowly. I responded with an affirmation, using the old saying of encouragement: ‘Slowly but surely.”
It’s a message I wanted to convey about a Christian’s spiritual journey—even if you feel as though you are lagging, movement is the key. So, this Sunday, remember that the gate of heaven opens even to those of us who walk slowly but surely.
