Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth – Proverbs 19:2
The final scene in Lifetime’s The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story is a very insightful conversation Monica, played by actress Lela Rochon, has with a mother of one of her students at a daycare. Included in Monica’s encouragement to the woman she believes to be in an abusive relationship is: “There’s been a time in my life when I’ve ignored red flags too. And in turn, I put myself in danger and my family.” Monica’s “red flags” had been the occasional uneasiness she experienced during time spent with a man met on a dating app. And the reference to potential harm to self and family was Monica’s discovery of how close she had been to becoming another dead victim.
Just as it’s never good to make major decisions when upset or angry, it’s also not good to start a romantic relationship when feeling lonely. The need to remove what’s perceived to be lacking will obscure and even rationalize gut warning signals. Monica White’s story is a good reminder about wisdom not only for dating but also for pursuing a certain venture. Anxiety can cause one to ignore the Holy Spirit’s nudge to trust God’s timing and the message in Proverbs 19:2.
Monica White’s story, though tragic for the two women killed—and any other unknown victims—offers an essential warning about not ignoring dangerous signs. Whatever is desired is never worth the cost of physical or emotional harm.
