So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God – Romans 14:12
“I couldn’t just sit by and be called names and do nothing,” Charlie answered his father’s question about being suspended from class. “I keep telling you, there’s a difference between defending yourself from physical harm and responding in anger!” Nathaniel heatedly responded. “Son, speaking as an accountant, you need to change your accounting system. Because your books and records don’t add up. And one day they’re going to really get you in hot water.”
Most people rarely use the term books and records in their comings and goings. That is, unless in receipt of a letter informing of a scheduled audit of a specific tax filing, and one’s accounting system becomes relevant. However, the Bible forewarns of an appointed time when every individual will be required to “give account” not of the accuracy of a tax return, but the stewardship of our lives—words and deeds. Our books and records, metaphorically speaking, will be judged by God, and His findings will determine how rewarding the outcome will be.
Each day of our lives is an opportunity to prepare for our scheduled audit. So, that when the time comes, the verdict will be what we desire to hear: “Well done, my faithful servant.”
