The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him – Proverbs 23:24
“I want to do that!” Jeffrey excitedly tells his mother, pointing at the sign to create a personalized Father’s Day card, as they enter the drug store. So, with his mother’s concurrence, the twelve-year-old hastens to the kiosk and tells the male attendant his wishes. After several promptings and the inclusion of a poem, Jeffrey smiles at the finished product. “Sir, do you mind reading it so I can hear if it sounds okay?” “Certainly,” the man says and begins reading:
My Daddy knows he doesn’t have to be,
Like the father played by Bill Cosby,
I only want him to stay real,
And keep making me feel,
Whenever we’re together,
That I make his life better.
So on this Father’s Day,
I wanted to express in my own way,
That I’m thankful God chose to make you one,
And that God chose me to be your son.
While fathers come in different shapes and sizes, there is one wish every child (young or older) desires: their father’s attentiveness. Because the old cliché: “It’s not the quantity, but the quality,” is crucial. So, on this Father’s Day, I hope you will seek to make your child’s wish come true by making every second together count.
