Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all – 1 Chronicles 29:11
Dear Lord,
Before I start my day,
To You I humbly pray
That as it unfolds
I won’t confuse our roles
And believe that I can do
What’s only assigned to You.
The phrase “Know Your Role” was a frequent expression Dwayne Johnson, AKA “The Rock,” would yell as a forewarning to his wrestling opponent. Its purpose was to alert the opposition to their ineptness compared to his untarnished record in the ring. Not only was The Rock’s utterance an excellent form of smack talk, but it is also worthwhile advice spiritually. Recognizing the chain of command as a Christian is the best defense against unnecessary stress and unrealistic expectations. Acknowledging a role that’s limited and dependent on God’s Sovereignty is the prerequisite for dealing with daily cares peacefully.
On this first Monday in July, I hope the opening prayer is useful in your preparations for today. A willingness to admit neediness by recognizing your role is the best position to receive God’s power.
