To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified \u2013 Isaiah 61:3\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As it has been since the atrocities that took place on September 11, 2001, this year\u2019s twenty-fifth anniversary continued a theme of reflection and tribute to the thousands who died on that day. Several survivors expressed heartfelt appreciation for their rescuers and shared pictures showing how their lives have evolved over the years. Some got married, raised families, became grandparents, or found new careers. Although the lingering impact of losing co-workers, friends, husbands, and wives was evident, their resolve to move forward in their loved ones’ memory was unmistakable. All of these individuals chose to rechannel their sorrow into lives dedicated to honoring those who didn\u2019t make it that day.<\/p>\n

While shifting from feeling immobilized by the absence of a loved one toward embracing the future is eased by non-judgmental support, ultimate healing depends on a daily relationship with God. He is the One who not only controls life and death but also promises to give those who mourn “the oil of joy for mourning.” He brings clarity and peace when the path forward feels heavy with guilt\u2014especially when moving on is considered desertion. God instead reassures us that our loved ones are not left behind, but are carried in the one place they will never leave\u2014the heart.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no \u201cone-size-fits-all\u201d approach to handling the death of a loved one. I\u2019ve discovered this personal journey is best traveled with God, who will guide and comfort you by transforming a robe of sorrow into robes of gratitude and purpose, in tribute to the one who continues to live within your heart.
