Is It Worth The Stretch? (1) – Monday, November 3, 2025

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? – Luke 14:28

A pivotal meeting in the movie Heat took place between Robert DeNiro’s character, Neil McCauley, and his go-to-guy about an upcoming heist.  During the discussion, Neil is warned about the risks of robbing a bank and a detective’s quest to take him and his crew down.  Neil responded: “It’s worth the stretch,” and when questioned again, he reiterated: “I’m sure.”  The scene came to mind as I deliberated over a project and what it would entail if pursued.    I found myself weighing the pros and cons of moving forward with it or choosing not to.

As it’s said, you should never make important decisions when your judgment has been compromised, such as when intoxicated, nor should it be done when anxious or stressed.  Anxiety, especially if fueled by the fear of missing out on something, can drive a person to act hastily, because it’s believed his or her last window of opportunity is that thing.   Or the individual may feel pressured to fit in and be accepted; thus, getting involved with a particular activity is perceived as the solution.

Jesus’ warning to count the cost before seeking to follow Him is just as important when considering whether to pursue something.  It shouldn’t be done hastily or without consulting God first.  Because what may be worth the stretch to one person may end up becoming excruciatingly costly to another.
