Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts – Psalm 139:23
“Good morning,” Darlene greeted the lady. “Are you here for screenings of your blood pressure and cholesterol?” “Uhm,” the lady responded. “I’ve seen your puzzled expression from every person who dropped by after seeing the Heart-Healthy flyer, expecting it to be held at a clinic, not a church. Be assured, there are two highly qualified nurses inside with the equipment to perform the required tests. And afterwards, my pastor is available if you feel a need to check the health of your heart spiritually.”
Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of heart attacks, occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked due to unhealthy indulgences. They include smoking, excessive drinking, and poor diets that can lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. And while it’s critical to address these harmful behaviors, it’s also important to uncover their root cause. Which is the screening God provides for those who come asking: “And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:24).
Although February’s American Heart Month is almost over, its focus should be ongoing. Because pursuing a lifestyle that promotes physical and spiritual wellness is the key to being Heart-Healthy.
