But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another – Galatians 6:4

An interesting tale is told of a college guidance counselor who, after meeting with a student’s parents, dismisses them.  Alone with their son, the counselor inquires: “If tuition wasn’t an issue, meaning you weren’t dependent on your parents’ money, who do you want to become?” The student responds by asking: “Who did my parents say I want to become?” “To my surprise, your mom and dad both agreed that they would support whatever you choose. This means you’re free to become the person you were meant to be,” the counselor answered.

Wouldn’t it be ideal to have parental approval to pursue whatever vocation best suits your passion?  While some may have this type of unconditional support, others struggle to meet imposed expectations. However, pursuing someone else’s direction will ultimately lead to unfulfillment and regret.  It’s only when you seek who God has purposed you to be and choose to become it that you’ll feel assured of His approval.

This is not to say that pursuing one’s passion is to ignore responsibilities, which being employed in another occupation will provide the means.  It instead encourages mindfulness and determination to discover and accomplish in your life what you were chosen to do.
